If you’ve ever been to Oktoberfest in Munich, you’d know it’s a rosy-cheeked sing-a-long type experience that is blatantly boozy and undeniably bucketlist-esque. An adult theme park that replaces fairy floss with litre beers and roasted pork knuckle, and stuffed toy prizes with oom-pah bands and nonstop renditions of “Sweet Caroline”. Never one to miss out something that fun, Melbourne is getting an Oktoberfest Street Party thanks to Munich Brahaus South Wharf. Vielen dank!
Munich Brahaus South Wharf will be hosting a rabble thirty punters in lederhosen September 9 (did you know the 16 to 18-day folk festival runs from mid or late September to the first weekend in October?).
In addition to the pouring, cheers’ing and downing of steins filled with German beer (bier), the Oktoberfest Street Party will include Australia’s only Oktoberfest Parade, the inaugural Dogs of Oktoberfest Costume Contest and the great Pork Knuckle Championhip.
Pork Knuckle Championship
Munich Brahaus South Wharf is famous for its crispy schweinshaxe. Open to anyone game, the Pork Knuckle Championship will crown whoever can eat a pork knuckle the fastest. Besides the eternal pork glory, the winner with revceive a $500 voucher.
Dogs of Oktoberfest
We all know that dogs in dress-up is one of modern society’s greatest achievements. So of course, hounds in lederhosen and dirndls is always going to be a hit. And the icing on the cake – $1 from each pretzel sold will be donated to local animal rescue charities.
Prost
Prost is the German translation for Cheers, and probably the most important word you need going into any Oktoberfest event. Also remember to look the person that you are prost’ing in the eye. Failure to do so is not only considered rude, but Germans believe you will be punished with seven years of bad sex.
Prost!
Oktoberfest Street Party will take place September 16 from 11 am til late at Munich Brauhaus.
