Young Designer Showcase

Mar 2, 2018  ·  3 min read

Here at QT, we love to support talented artists of all ages and creative outlets. To follow on from our piece on all the opportunities that Sydney presents to new talent, we’d like to touch once again upon the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.

On March the 9th, 12 finalist student designers will exhibit their collections in the National Graduate Showcase and it sure is one to keep your eye on!

These highly gifted young things will be showing their wares to a crowd of influencers, industry leaders, and the public at the Royal Exhibition Building.

This is a fantastic opportunity to witness the burgeoning designers in the Australia fashion scene. We can guarantee that you will not be disappointed.

The designers showing at this year’s event are from the University of Technology Sydney, RMIT in Melbourne and the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Melbourne. They were selected from over 100 graduates from all over the country to participate in this prestigious event.

This year has a particular focus on sustainability and innovation with some of the designers creating their own zero waste textiles, hand painting fabric and embroidery, plus there is a massive push for using this platform to foster positive change.

“This year, we have seen a new standard of creativity from designers who show a level of maturity and industry understanding far beyond their years.” Says Festival CEO, Craweme Lewsey.

Fun fact: It will be the first time in the nine-year history of the showcase that sisters, Tess Tavener Hanks and Mikala Tavener Hanks (both University of Technology Sydney), will be showing at the same time.

Another fun fact: Chris Ran Lin was part of the lucky few chosen for the showcase in 2012. This year he is showing as part of the GQ Menswear Runway show.

History of the event

Previous graduate designers involved in this show at VAMFF have gone on to create their own labels, work for the likes of Dior, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein and Versace, and have dressed celebrity royalty such as Lady Gaga, Anne Hathaway and Christy Turlington. They have also been featured in top magazines such as Vogue and Interview.

This fantastic launching pad for young designers also allows an opportunity for the public to experience and marvel at the pure talent of artists just starting out.

Open your eyes to the next generation in fashion!

When: 7pm on Friday, 9 March

Where: Royal Exhibition Building
