Briggs, Sampa The Great, Marky Ramone, Freq Nasty and Ariel Pink are among a long list of artists about to unleash for Melbourne Music Week. Now is its 8th year, the citywide festival showcases the depth and diversity of Melbourne’s creative music industry in unique spaces around town.
Getting one up on last year’s hub at State Library Victoria, this year’s MMW hub will be St Paul’s Cathedral. The masterwork of gothic architecture will give up its usual chill and prayer-ish vibe for the energy that only comes with booming German techno, provocative hip hop and Melburnian neo soul.
The assortment of indoor and outdoor gigs and parties will range from the free (Skeggs + Tired Lion) to the experimental (INDIGO ATLAS), all ages (Kids Silent Disco Party) and those who refuse to be categorised (Moopie + Phile + Tackle).
Once again, we’re spoilt for choice with a lineup that is full of discoverables. From the heaps to look out for, here are our hot tips:
Jacques Greene + Banoffee + Planète
Listen to Altair by Planète, Another Girl by Jacques Greene and you’ll know what to expect from this mini, albeit stellar lineup. Throw in some of Banoffee’s pop pleasantries for dessert and you’ve got yourself proper party.
Fortunes.
Playing on the same as bill as Sampa The Great, The Harpoons, Spike F**k, Marcus Whale, Anuraag and Wahe, Fortunes are the pick of the bunch for us. The Melbourne duo deliver audio layers of hip hop, neo soul and electronic characterized with glitchy snares, satisfying harmonies and phat basslines.
DJ Hell
Helmut Geier is also known as DJ Hell. A (hell) man of many talents, Geier is a DJ, label owner, producer, remixer (the likes of Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, P. Diddy, Fischerspooner), fashionista, art aficionado, and techno messenger and genre bender. Expect an unexpected set.
Melbourne Music Week runs from November 17-25 at various venues across the city.
