Ballooning in Melbourne

Apr 27, 2017  ·  2 min read

Remember that scene from Aladdin when the fez-wearing scamp boldly takes Princess Jasmine on a magic carpet ride? They see unbelievable sights and feel indescribable feelings – Aladdin’s words, not mine. We see them soaring, tumbling and freewheeling through an endless diamond sky. He gives her a new fantastic point of view, and ultimately introduces the rebellious princess to a whole new world. It’s bloody beautiful.

That exact flying experience is available in Melbourne… just replace the magic carpet with a hot air balloon.

Maybe you fit the lovable rouge bill, or perhaps you’re a new age urban princess. Either way, hopping in a hot air balloon and surrendering to the mercy of the wind is quite an experience.

Usually reserved for the countryside, there aren’t many major cities around the world where hot air ballooning is an option. And to be honest, I’m not sure why. It’s like vista-oriented skydiving without the scariness. A fine balance stunning views and slight adrenaline.

This is definitely a bucket list activity.

The day starts before the crack of dawn when the streets are almost empty and only clubs like Revolver are still going strong. The balloon is filled and away you float. As welcomed heights are reached, it’s both calming and invigorating. When the sun shows its warm golden face, emotions are high, someone will undoubtedly crack the “I’m flying, Jack” funny, and the use of the word “magical” is shamelessly embraced.

The Melbourne hot air balloon ride is an unforgettable escapade that takes willing punters on an adventure across the city; floating amongst skyscrapers, past popular landmarks like the MCG, and over the picturesque Port Phillip Bay.

With white knuckles and that sense of early morning accomplishment, it’s highly recommended that the seize-the-day mentality should be continued after the balloon ride with post-flight breakfast and bubbles.
