Embrace the Old Melbourne

Melbourne is clearly a much-loved city; there is no denying that. From things to see and do, amazing restaurants, funky bars, and the quintessential lovely Aussie people … what’s not to love? (Maybe just the weather at times, but the rest makes up for it!).

Another great aspect of Melbourne is the quirky, creepy and cool history, which we can still explore today, mostly in the form of historic buildings that have been restored and that are now revered.

If you are a history buff or just want to learn a little bit more about Melbourne as a city, here are some truly cool historic hotspots to visit in and around the city for a touch of old-school charm (and a few friendly ghosts).

Brighton Bathing Boxes

Enter the 82 bathing boxes in the Port Phillip Bay area. They were built over a century ago to assist with the Victorian thoughts about morality whilst bathing. They are still very much in tack with each ‘Box’ representing a different artistic aesthetic. Brighton Beach in itself is definitely worth a visit and the touch of history makes it essential.

Old Melbourne Gaol

‘Old’ is the operative word. The gaol is no longer operational but the happenings in this space are well worth reading about. The gaol housed some of Melbourne’s most dangerous criminals from 1845 -1924. We won’t go into too many gory details but the gallows are still in place and you can see Ned Kelly’s death mask. We recommend the audio guide to fully experience the extent of what happened at this gaol when it was still housing inmates.

Abbotsford Convent

This convent has been active for over 100 years providing support and shelter for women and children in need. It’s a little spooky but very interesting and intriguing. A place dedicated to helping those that are struggling will surely have some pretty interesting stories. The building itself is worth a visit, as well as the expansive grounds.

The best way to see these beauties is to do a walking tour, if possible, or peruse at your own desire. There are a plethora of stories about these spots and you will be mesmerised by the tales.

If you fancy seeing some of Victoria’s stunning old colonial houses and mansions we recommend Como House and Garden, Werribee Park and Mansion and Rippon Lea.

There are so many great tales to be told and heard about the history of Melbourne and Australia in general so, if you fancy, get involved.
