There’s a new yoga in town and it’s far from its chakra-aligned, Namaste-spewing, Instagram-posting brothers and sisters. This is yoga with attitude. This yoga for badasses. This, my passionate friend, is Fury Yoga.
Fury Yoga is a relatively new and ingenious initiative by the bandits at Bar Open – you know Bar Open, right? The infamously awesome Fitzroy watering-hole in the heart of Brunswick Street that is loved by locals and known for its support of the local music scene. Yep, that Bar Open.
The revered Yoga Master, Keely, or as we like to call her Killer Keely the Ferocious, is a known hater of slow walkers, queue-cutters and those who don’t replace a toilet paper roll. Having studied the art of yoga under guru Vishnudevananda Saraswati in India, Keely returned to Melbourne a yogi on a mission to make yoga accessible to everyone, especially those far from the yoga stereotype. And that, she did.
Keely, originally of Beyyoga (yoga to Beyonce) fame, met with Ed from The Break Room (smash-it-up-with-bats anger release therapy), and being the two people that recognise the importance of venting emotion and that aren’t scared to go against the grain that they are – Fury Yoga was born.
Described as, “yoga without the worry of your chakras, your gear or your sweat patches”, Fury Yoga invites/dares you to, “listen to killer tracks and get bendy.” Forget Lorna Jane and Laura Kasperzak-like flexibility, this is vinyasa yoga with good music for those that don’t want to give up beer and doughnuts.
Fury Yoga costs $25, which includes mat hire and a pot of beer at the bar afterwards.
Note – There will be swearing. There will be flipping the bird. There will be screaming.
Fury Yoga is at Bar open on the first Friday of every month.
