Book of Mormon

From the creators of South Park comes The Book of Mormon. That’s right; Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the ingenious clowns that take the piss out of every single thing on earth through a simply-drawn kid’s (not really for kids) cartoon have a musical. And for the last five years, said musical has been on a popular rampage through Broadway, Chicago, the West End, and has now (finally) come to spread the word down under.

Since its debut in 2011, The Book of Mormon has deservedly snatched up nine Tonys (including Best Musical) and a Grammy, and has been called the funniest musical of all time.

With their nothing-is-sacred ethos and with the help of songwriting whiz kid Robert Lopez, Parker and Stone dissect the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, unashamedly poke fun at missionaries and spear-tackle touchy subjects, like AIDS, famine and racism.

Much to the delight of South Park lovers and to the dismay of those not based in Victoria – tickets to the Melbourne-only shows are now on sale. In fact, they are selling like hot cakes, with the whole of January already sold out and February with only limited availability… lucky for some, the production runs all through March too.

Never mind the C-bombs and embrace the blasphemy – The Book of Mormon is a must-see. The blatant disregard for people’s sensibilities is refreshing in a world full of social justice warriors on a mission to be insulted.

Is this production offensive? To many pundits, for sure. Is this the two Coloradan’s masterwork? It seems so. Is this the funniest musical ever? No doubt.

The Book of Mormon is showing at the Princess Theatre and is now booking from 18 January 2017. Tickets are from $50.68
