I want to start this piece by prefacing that I am not a vegan (yet). I have a long list of friends who would claim to be vegan; be it casual or lifetime members.
When you look at the facts behind animal production, it kind of gets a little disgusting. I get why the vegan lifestyle would win some over. It’s terrible to say that the only reason I’m not yet a vegan is because the flavour of my favourite meats cannot be replicated. The idea of breakfast without bacon kills me, much like it kills the planet to produce, so say my veganic friends.
So when the good people at Melbourne Vegan Eats gather some of the best darn vegan producers around town and throw the biggest market of its type, maybe it’s time to question my carnivorous ways… or at very least enjoy the sweet produce derived from products other than animal (labels are a terrible thing).
The market has had to be moved to the Royal Exhibition Building due to the sheer number of stalls requesting a spot on the lineup. There are far too many to name. The list is bigger than the Splendour in the Grass lineup.
With stalls offering food, drinks, fashion, craft and skincare, you won’t need to question the ingredients as they are all certified as 100% vegan.
Instead of making your way to the Queen Vic Markets on Saturday, maybe you should swap it for the Big Vegan Market and go meat-free for a day, or a week, or until it sticks. Or don’t. It is very much up to you.
You’ll no doubt be tempted with doughnuts that don’t contain dairy, kombucha that will have your insides feeling clean and a whole range of foods that the planet will thank you for choosing.
