Explore Alice’s Wonderland

Apr 5, 2018  ·  2 min read

I don’t know about you but I’m excited because the world premiere of the immersive Wonderland exhibition is opening at ACMI in Melbourne today!

Based entirely on the story of Alice in Wonderland, this presentation at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image pays homage to Lewis Caroll’s tale and all the various representations since the story was first told in 1865.

From countless films, TV programs, comics, games, stage shows, songs, music videos and ballet adaptations – Alice in Wonderland is one of the most recognisable narratives of the last century.

The alluring event at ACMI will take viewers into the enchanted world of Alice and delves into her screen history with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. Look out for appearances by the infamous Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the smoking Caterpillar. It will not just be these main adaptations of Alice’s antics and adventures that will be showcased, you will have the opportunity to peruse information and commentary on more than 40 cinema and 30 television versions of this famous fable.

As Alice’s timeless journeys have been documented for over 100 years, the exhibition will include explanations on the use of animation, puppetry, live-action cinema, video games, CGI, 3D and more, as well as playful environments, digital activities and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the Wonderland world. Through this voyage take note of the obvious evolution of film-making which is fantastically insightful in its own right.

Where: ACMI, Federation Square, Flinders St, Melbourne
When: Until 7 October

ACMI tells us to “Imagine a world where nothing is impossible”. Make sure to take a trip through the looking glass and learn about all things Wonderland. Down the rabbit hole we go!
