4 Things to do on Australia Day in Melbourne

Jan 19, 2017  ·  3 min read

Hate it or love it, Australia Day is a public holiday. Public holidays mean a day off work for most. And anytime there is a day off work, there are parties and events happening around town. From beer yoga beginnings to barefoot bowling and humble barbeques, there are plenty of chances to wet the whistle. We take a look at 4 things to do on Australia Day in Melbourne.

BierYoga
You might have heard of this… it’s kind of a big deal. The mad-with-power kids at Speakeasy Kitchen Bar have forced a marriage between beer and yoga. The Frankenstein creation is held over one hour – with beer being incorporated into each yoga pose. This starts at 11:30 AM, you don’t have to have yoga experience, but you should have a love of beer. Deets HERE.

Did you know beer was banned in Iceland until 1989? #beer #beeryoga #yoga #BierYoga

Bowled Over 2017
Touted as “Melbourne’s favourite Hottest 100 Party”, Bowled Over is broken up into four sections; the Secret Garden, for those wanting to listen to the countdown, play bocce and drink Sailor Jerry; Sailor Jerry Clubhouse, an indoor stage set to host a bunch of local bands; Stone & Wood Bowling Club, this is where you lawn bowl; And Leonard’s House Of Love Pop-Up, for all your grub needs (burgers, snags, wings etc.)

BBQ and Hottest 100
Overcooked snags, beer-filled eskies, Triple J pumping the Hottest 100 and a group of mates hanging out all day. This is standard practice for a lot of Aussies. If you’re a visitor, make friends with someone throwing a BBQ and snag yourself an invite. NOTE – in Australia, “snag” can mean “sausage” OR “acquire”.

AusFest 2017 Australia Day Cider Festival
If beer (and therefore beer yoga) isn’t your thing, the Australia Day Cider Festival might be more up your alley. This shindig was voted in the top three Hottest 100 parties by Triple J and is in its sixth year in 2017. This event is all about apple crumble with calvados custard and vanilla ice-cream, pulled pork rolls and steins full of cider. Yep!
