Wikipedia tells us that, “the history of gelato is rife with myths and very little evidence to substantiate them”. This is gelato we’re talking about here, not something infamously shrouded in mystery, like the mafia, 2pac or Pavlova. The Pharaohs were apparently slurping ice with fruit juice in 2500 B.C. and in the Italian Renaissance the gelato game really stepped up a notch, but that’s all in the past.
Modern day Da Vinci’s are inventing new gelato strains never previously thought possible and masters of the craft are perfecting the classics. Mystery or not, we’ve come a long way, baby. We look to the future of frozen dessert; at the four best gelato flavours in Melbourne right now… they should definitely not be a mystery.
Fior di Latte
Gelateria Primavera is located inside Spring Street Grocer and is run by a cream-smith by the name of Massimo Bidin. If he was a character in Mortal Combat, his name would remain unchanged and the Fior di Latte would be his finishing move. Also the name of a delicious Italian cheese, Fior di Latte is gelato in its purest form – no flavourings, no egg yolks, no mercy.Gaytime Crunch
Australians take their Gaytime very seriously. It’s a fact. Remember when Streets brought out the tub of Gaytime ice cream and everyone blew up because it was missing the cookie crumb? It was outrageous… no crumb. Nitro Lab have made note of this obsession and concocted the Gaytime Crunch – Salted caramel gelato with crushed dark choc chips, home-made buttery gold biscuit crumble and a dark caramel sauce.
