Visit The Arts Centre Gold Coast to see Transparent: Watercolour in Queensland 1850s-1890s.
Transparent explores the long and diverse history of watercolour painting in Queensland. Used by early settlers to depict the landscape, by later artists to evoke the growing city of Brisbane and by wartime artists to record daily activities, the medium of watercolour is portable and adaptable, perfect for capturing quick impressions.
Drawn from the Queensland Art Gallery’s collection, this exhibition charts the early colonial era and late nineteenth century, modern watercolour developments in the early twentieth century, the challenges of World War Two, and the more recent development of a local strain of expressionism.
Chris Saines, Director of Queensland Art Gallery/GOMA reflected, ‘‘Transparent reveals the considerable talent and achievements of Queensland’s watercolour artists including Conrad Martens, Harriet Jane Neville Rolfe, JJ Hilder, Kenneth Macqueen, WG Grant, Isaac Walter Jenner and many others who occupy a significant place in the history of Australian art.”
Artists featured in this exhibition include Conrad Martens, Harriet Jane Neville-Rolfe, J.J. Hilder, Vida Lahey, Kenneth Macqueen, WG Grant, Joe Rootsey, Margaret Cliento and Joy Roggenkamp.
