In the 1920’s, in the French region of Landes, near Bordeaux, marriages are arranged to merge land parcels and unite neighbouring families. Thus, young and free-spirited Thérèse Larroque becomes Mrs. Bernard Desqueyroux. Married life in provincial France does not agree with Thérèse, however, who quickly finds herself stifled by the tedium of her surroundings (while her husband’s estate is beautiful, it is filled with stiff in-laws who look down on her avant-garde ideas) and the intellectual mediocrity of her husband.
In order to break free from the fate imposed upon her and live the full life she dreams of, Thérèse decides to apply her poisonous outlook in literal terms…but her extreme measures, will bring extreme consequences.
Acclaimed director Claude Miller’s elegant final film – adapted from the well-known novel byFrançois Mauriac – is a magnificently staged and thought-provoking drama that gives its beloved leading lady one of the finest roles of her career
