The sweetest melancholy

Jan 3, 2012  ·  1 min read

In one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2012, ‘Melancholia’ takes us through the devastating depths of depression and the inability of us, as a race, to see the good in what we have, versus the pain in what we do not have.

The basic plot borders on sci-fi and leaves you wondering what you would do given the realisation of one of the most evident fears of our collective consciousness, ‘What would you do in your last hours before the earth was destroyed?’.

Here is a little synopsis (not exactly a spoiler, but I will give some detail away):

‘On the night of her wedding, Justine is struggling to be happy even though it should be the happiest day of her life. It was an extravagant wedding paid for by her sister and brother-in-law who are trying to keep the bride and all the guests in-line.

Meanwhile, Melancholia, a blue planet, is hurtling towards the Earth. Claire, Justine’s sister, is struggling to maintain composure with fear of the impending disaster.’

This is a depressing delight from Lars von Trier. We loved it. Every moment.

Now showing at The Arts Centre Gold Coast.
