More than 250 tonnes of sand will be transported to the glitter strip for the event, which will be held from 8th of February to the 2nd of March. In addition to the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships, locals and tourists will be able to enjoy a Gold Coast wide Sand Trail, check out a 20 tonne feature sculpture and watch an Australia vs The World Sand Battle.
Surfers Paradise Alliance Chairwoman Laura Younger said this year Sand Safari is even bigger and better. “Last year’s event was hugely successful with a number of families, locals and tourists alike, coming into Surfers Paradise for the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships. This year we’re excited to see this event expand beyond Surfers Paradise to the entire Gold Coast with The Sand Trail,” she said.
The first sculpture in the Gold Coast Sand Trail, a giant storybook (pictured), was unveiled at the Helensvale Branch Library on Tuesday. Thirteen more intricately carved sculptures are expected to pop up in hotel lobbies, shopping centres and public spaces around the city.
From the 14th February, the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships will return to Surfers Paradise as ten professional sand sculptors from around the country battle it out on the iconic Foreshore. Some of the sculptors will also work together to create a giant 20 tonne sand sculpture for Streets that will take centre stage on the foreshore. From 20th February, it will be Australia versus the World as the two teams form to see who can carve the best sculpture from 25 tonnes of sand in three days.
