QT loves local illustrator Hayley O’Connor

Jun 25, 2020  ·  3 min read

When you think of design, fashion and art – you think of Hayley O’Connor.

Local Graphic Designer and Illustrator, Hayley brings to life urban lifestyle, surf culture and femininity in her beautiful graphical musings. Her illustrations are every part edgy, elegant and a total vibe (if we do say so ourselves). We collaborated with the talented artist on the launch of our new poolside playground, The Spring (artwork above). But just to round herself up as a triple threat, she also  splashes her talent in the world of photography.

QT were lucky enough to sit down with Hayley when she swapped her office for a luxury designer suite – and yes, we’ve got the goss.

You recently booked a Work From Hotel at QT, how did it feel getting away from your everyday four walls?

It felt pretty special working from the QT Gold Coast. The vibe of the hotel was amazing and sometimes a change of location just makes you more creative and changes your perspective.

What does a day in the life of a graphic designer/artist look like?

It’s really varied. Sometimes I’m designing logos or working on a photo shoot as a graphic designer then as an Illustrator I’m creating T-shirt art or a pattern for a client. I love it changes all the time and keeps it interesting.

What is your trade secret for when you come into a creative block? If so, please tell us – we need it.

I’ve found the best inspiration comes from learning a new creative skill. It can set me off on a whole series of new artworks and give me that creative energy back and leads to new and better ideas.

Your office was in our new Ocean View Suites, what’s your opinion as a creative on the design and aesthetic?

I loved the retro Gold Coast/Palm Springs vibe of the interior design and art in the room. Definitely a unique and inspiring space, and the Ocean View is so dreamy.

What was the one thing you chose to indulge in during your Work From Hotel?

I ordered the Miso Salmon and it was so yum! And of course, a cheeky Kit Kat from the Mini Bar with my coffee.

If you were stuck in a hotel room for a day, who would you choose to be stuck with and why?

I would totally pick 1970’s or 1980’s David Bowie. I would love to see his creative process during this time.

Is this the last you’ll see of Hayley at QT? Absolutely not.

Will there be an illustration workshop coming soon? Maybe.

Can you learn more? Absolutely. To find out more about Hayley, please click HERE.
