There are ‘hipsters’ and then there are ‘hippies’…and on this occasion we are talking the real deal. The home of the authentic hippie which is Mullumbimby.
When Gold Coasters migrate south on the weekend for a splash of freedom they often hit the open road (flower crown worn proudly) and head for the cool vibes of Byron Bay. And who could blame them? Byron is a spectacular muse.
However, for a taste of something a little different, the quaint but vibrant little town of Mullumbimby is a must. Located just 20 minutes west of Byron Bay in the Hinterland, this charming town is chockers with great cafes, boutiques sporting locally made products (the stuff you’d actually want to buy) and of course, a myriad of quality yoga, reiki, meditation, crystal (and all other wonderfully alternate) workshops for you to try your hand at.
The town of ‘Mullum’ (as we affectionately know it now) really comes to life though for the annual Mullum Music Festival (MMF).
MMF’s ninth instalment is set to unleash 80 artists performing over four days in 12 venues throughout the little town of Mullumbimby from November 17–20.
The action-packed program is spread across multiple venues throughout the town. The use of existing structures is a very special aspect of the festival and reinforces not only the ‘roaming community’ vibe of the event, but also the sustainability of the town both financially and environmentally – two things which the organisers work very hard to ensure.
International musicians include American singer-songwriters Eilen Jewell and Julien Baker, Vancouver duo The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer and fellow Canadian blues guitarist and singer- songwriter Matt Andersen.
Australian highlights include Melbourne’s ultra cool Olympia and outlaw country rock band Henry Wagons & The Only Children. Not to mention Bobbly Alu and the Palm Royale, Hat Fitz & Cara, Jordie Lane and one of our fave singer-songwriters Lior (who is set to release a new single in time for MMF).
Be sure to catch the popular Opening Night Gala, street parades and workshops to boot. It’s your weekend sorted – the Mullum Music Festival is a MUST!
