Motherland is an epic new work of historical fiction, informed by actual events, like the Russian revolution, World war II and Brisbane historical happenings.
Written in 2009 by Katherine Lyall-Waton, Motherland is the story of three women exiled from the homelands. Their fined lives are woven together across the oceans and through decades of love, loss and revolution.
As far as Brisbane socialites go, Nell Tritton is one of the few who to this day made a stage… heck, Lyall-Watson even wrote a play about her. The story follows her marriage to the Russian Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky with their mischievous escape from the Nazis during World War II.
Nina Berberova, a feisty writer and academic, adds to the story after she quits her native country of Russia for Paris. The final leading lady is mother Alyona, a Russian museum curator who like many was whisked away to Brisbane by an ever-so-sexy Australian Businessman.
Having received multiple awards like Winner Best Independent Production and Best Overall Production at the 2013 Matilda awards, the stage is being prepared for what will be two amazing nights at the Gold Coast Arts Centre.
Motherland has assisted in many creative developments and workshops with the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane and the Metro Arts and serves as a platform for many young Australian drama students.
If arts and culture is your kind of vibe, check out the full seasons programs at the website.
Motherland runs at Gold Coast Arts Centre May 6 and 7, 2016.
