Local Legends Competing in the Commonwealth Games

Holy Jebus! Can you believe that, as of today, it’s only 14 days until the Games? I tell you what, the Gold Coast has certainly come of age for this years 21st annual Commonwealth Games as we get set for it to descend upon the vibrant Gold Coast from the 4th of April.

The Gold Coast will open its metaphorical doors to more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 Commonwealth nations in a celebration of sport, entertainment and culture. The festivities are even stretching across Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville. Athletes housed in the state of the art athletes village will go all out to excel in one of the 18 sports and seven para-sports.

Now, being a GC local, I get bragging rights to say this city is looking schmick, and so is the line up local legends who have worked hard for this very moment in their life – competing at the Games. We’ve got a few we’re keeping our eyes on, and who knows … they might even bring home the gold!

The locals to look out for:

Cameron McEvoy – Swimming

McEvoy is more than just a pretty face with an Instagramable six pack! Born on the Gold Coast in 1994, this dolphin of a swimmer has more a than handful of achievements. Cam has qualified for the 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle individual events, breaking the Commonwealth record in the 200-metre freestyle and it’s not even the games yet! He’s also qualified for the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays and 4x100m medley. He’s going to be busy!

Laura Geitz – Netball

A stellar player and well known for being apart of the QLD Firebirds, Geitz will once again represent the Australian team in Netball at the Commonwealth Games. Juggling motherhood and a busy training schedule seem a walk in the park for this power player, who is set to bring the thunder in Australia’s first game against Northern Ireland on the 5th of April.

Elijah Winnington – Swimming

Now this young bloke has sure come along way! At just 17 years of age, Winnington is still a baby compared to some of his teammates. However, he has a small boasting right over McEvoy for beating him in the 200m at the NSW Swimming Championships, but who will reign supreme in the Games?
