spaQWhere does one find the best damn Gold Coast toasties? The top toasted sanga in Surfers? The number one jaffle south of Brissie? It’s a question that melts in the mouths of Queensland cheese lovers on the regular, and a question that we think we’ve found the answer to.
We crunched our way up the golden stairway to jaffle heaven to find out where you should go when you’re on a search and destroy mission for Gold Coast toasties.
Brioche and gruyere
This brioche toastie from Honey Eater Kitchen is packed with gruyere cheese, loaded with butter and superbly toasted. Served with fries and aioli, this is an excellent pre-game meal to prepare yourself for afternoon drinks.
Beef Brisket Grilled Cheese
This gooey godsend from the Sandwich Bros on Cavill Ave is something to be reckoned with. The Beef Brisket Grilled Cheese is stuffed with slow-cooked brisket, caramelised onion, a gruyere and red Leicester cheese blend and French onion soup dip. Coming in a close second is the grilled mushroom toastie. And to top it all off, owner Dan’s banter will have you cracking up mid chomp.
Banoffee Jaffle
Although cheeseless, the banoffee toasted sandwich with caramel sauce, cream and Lindt flakes from Sparrow Eating House is the ideal dessert toastie to eat post-savoury toastie. For one of those I-really-need-two-toasties type days.
Vegan Toasties
All-Time Coffee serves up vegan toasties. Now, before a lot of you scoff, their pulled chicken, avo and cheese toastie; vegan ham and tomato toastie; and vegemite and cheese toastie are all vegan. And they are all downright delicious. They’re crunchy, gooey and they live up to the All-Time branding.
‘Imitation’ meat and cheese have never tasted so good. Being dog-friendly, having quality coffee and delicious vegan doughnuts definitely help too.
Mum’s Spaghetti
One would have to say that Randy Wallhole has the best business name on the Goldy. And they probably have the best range of Gold Coast toasties too. They may not have a standout toastie, but the consistency is across the board.
The big hitters are the Mum’s Special (Heinz spaghetti, cheese and pepper), BBQ Meat Lovers (salami, pastrami, bacon, tomato, cheese and BBQ sauce); the fancier Triple Cheese (feta, Swiss and tasty cheese), and Smokey Pulled Beef (pulled beef and cheese).
