Where’s the art at?
The art scene is alive and well on the Gold Coast. And to prove it, we’ve made a list of galleries that are definitely worth checking out. Are you a smug chin-stroking art know-it-all? Perhaps you’re one of those loveable rookies who finds themselves muttering “I don’t get it” all too often. Or maybe you rock an alpaca scarf and fedora to exhibitions to get some sophisticated street cred… Each to their own, I’m not here to judge. Whatever your interest is in art, get out there and check these places out:
19 Karen Contemporary Artspace
19 Karen Ave, Mermaid Beach
With the mantra of making art acquisition affordable and fun for all ages, these guys are onto a really good thing. Always on the look out for cutting-edge emerging, mid-career and established Australian and International artists, there are no boundaries to who they put on display.

Hinge Gallery @ Dust Temple
54 Currumbin Creek Road, Currumbin
Dust Temple is a creative nook home to a café (fl.oz Espresso), agency (Dust Agency), retailer (Dangerous Adventures) and most importantly Hinge Gallery. They have a regularly changing exhibition space, as well as Life Drawing classes and a slam poetry night.
Lmtdspace
3/32 Nerang Street, Southport
Lmtdspace are all about exhibiting professional, local, national and international artist work, but focus on promoting emerging and student contemporary artists. Exhibitions are held every three weeks and artists are encouraged to submit proposals for exhibitions throughout the year.
Sketches By Marcela @ Miami Marketta
23 Hillcrest Parade, Miami
Sketches By Marcela is the art studio/gallery of “self taught scribbler” Marcela Regalado and is part of the cultural precinct that is Miami Marketta. From furniture to cars to canvas there ain’t no medium safe from this wonder kid’s mostly Latin stylings.
4/18 Mountainview Avenue, Miami
This is a non-for-profit gallery serving as a “hub of creative practice, critical dialogue and innovative thinking around contemporary art and to develop as a permanent exhibition platform that will become an essential destination for contemporary art and cultural experience on the Gold Coast”… And in normal speak? A sweet space for art and creativity.
275 Boundary Street, Coolangatta
Food and art with views of the surf rolling in at Snapper Rocks and Duranbah… very tidy indeed. The art showcased is all from local artists and is updated every six weeks under guidance of Art Director Jo Kaiser. Check out the gift shop from heaps of locally made wares.
135 Bundall Road, Surfers Paradise
The aim of the Arts Centre is to be the beating cultural heart of the Gold Coast. And with the consistent art exhibitions, stage shows, kids and adult workshops, cinema showings and venue hire, they’re getting pretty bloody close to being exactly that.
Cnr Verona and Via Roma Streets, Isle of Capri
This community-orientated arts centre is involved in public arts and mural projects and runs art workshops, pop up art shows and the very popular monthly Artist in Residence exhibitions.
