A Real Eye-opener: World Press Photo 2015

Jun 12, 2015  ·  1 min read

By Niall Roeder

World Press Photo is an independent, non-profit organisation that is “committed to supporting and advancing photojournalism and documentary photography worldwide”.

They hold the world’s largest photojournalism competition, in which the photos are often confronting and always fascinating. The State Library of NSW will be home to this year’s travelling exhibition, which will be displayed in a massive 40 countries and will be seen by over a million people.

As well as the World Press Photo of the Year, winners are selected for a range of categories, such as Sports, News, Portraits, Daily Life and Nature.

This free event is a real eye-opener to what is happening around the globe. Past winners have included powerful and heart-wrenching images of the war in Syria, victims in the Gaza Strip and the conflict in Kosovo.

This year’s winner depicts a Russian gay couple, Jon and Alex. A pair that face potential legal discrimination and no doubt suffer hate and harassment due to their sexuality, in a country that only accepts heterosexuality.
