Have you heard the buzz around Sydney recently? It’s the sound of hard work and it’s producing some really sweet stuff. I am talking about the newest addition to QT Sydney’s team, our two beehives that are working hard on producing liquid gold from the rooftop. These hives just had the first harvest and the team managed to bottle 30 litres of pure locally sourced honey. Snap!
With the help of the very knowledgeable team at The Urban Bee Hive, the team at QT Sydney have been able to introduce two separate hives, totalling to a worker bee force of an estimated 40,000 with two very well tended too, Queen bees. The Queens will hold reign for the next three years, while her workers will enjoy their life of labouring for only a month or two.
The process started back in September 2014, with a little trial and error and a large amount of learning, the first hive was a success, enabling the introduction of the second hive in early 2015. With the first harvest producing more than expected, the buzz on the rooftop is that a third hive will arrive in 2016 to take the work force up a notch.
With the average bee pollinating within a 3km radius, this opens up for our bees to pass through Hyde Park, Botanical Gardens, through The Rocks, down into Darling Harbour, then passing Chinatown and Central while touching through the northern parts of Surry Hills before making their way home to Market Street.
When it comes to tasting the golden nectar, the honey being served in Gowings Bar &Â Grill will be from the latest harvest, produced by the hardest workers in the building.
