Art. It’s all around. Especially when you find yourself in Sydney. With the 20th Biennale of Sydney currently taking place all over the city, from Cockatoo Island to Carriageworks, it can become easy to look past the smaller galleries, though after spending some time around them recently, I have some highly recommend art dwellings that you might enjoy over the coming weeks. From the contemporary to the straight out confusing, the galleries listed below will have the power to change the way you see the world outside, though as the great Robert Hughes once said ‘I have never been against new art as such; some of it is good, much is crap, most is somewhere in between.’
SCAF
The Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation is tucked away in the depths of Paddington, once you find it, you’ll most likely add it to the list of your favourite art spots in the city. With a focus on audio/visual installations, the gallery was opened in 2008 as a philanthropic enterprise under the artistic eye of Dr Gene Sherman AM. Showing until mid May is WYE by South African artist and photographer Mikhael Subotzky. Blending the ideas of past, present and weird future, WYE is a must see exhibition.
Ambush
It’s the gallery where you can count on when you are in need of some deep seeded modern-day artistic revelations. By that, I mean Ambush gallery is always showing something worthy of your time artist. Take for example, From A Distant Land, this upcoming show will be displaying the 44 local artists from Sydney, focusing on the multicultural environment that we inhabit.
White Rabbit
After closing the doors for a month to recreate the gallery, White Rabbit in Chippendale is back with Heavy Artillery. A complete library of the colour blue, giant Buddhist deity statues and a Soviet-Chinese tank made of hand stitched leather, the exhibition will leave with a sense of… wow.
Annandale Galleries
As recent finds go, this is up there. Housed in a former Masonic Lodge and Methodist Church, The Annandale Galleries focus on recognised European pieces, while balancing that with a strong love for Indigenous art. At the moment, Tony Twigg has his installations from his Moonbathing exhibition on show, while from Arnhemland, the Yolngu tribe are displaying their works from bark, blending traditional and contemporary.
