Indira Naidoo’s Edible City

Oct 14, 2015  ·  2 min read

By Ben Stephens…

Do you ever bite into a supermarket-bought tomato and think ‘wow, there’s almost no flavour in that’, however you buy it because of the convenience and the rush to create a simple dish. If this resonates with you, then there is a book I urge you to get stuck into.

Australian journalist, host of SBS’s World News Tonight and blogger at the Saucy Onion, Indira Naidoo, has released her second book, entitled The Edible City. Following on from the best-selling success of her first publication The Edible Balcony, where Naidoo takes us onto her 13th floor balcony to see how she grows a unique range of fruit and vegetables, while offering stupidly delicious recipe ideas to complement her home-grown fresh produce.

The Edible City digs into the urban spaces around Sydney and Melbourne that have been turned into public gardens and that are producing fresh greens for the communities involved. With tips on how to create your own rooftop urban greengrocer, alongside a mouth-watering recipe section, The Edible City will help you find your inner green thumb and inner Jamie Oliver. Great combination.

“There aren’t too many green spaces around. So starting a community garden is a beautiful way to connect with nature. And it’s also a place where you can make social connections. With iPhones, and travelling in cars, we are really isolated from our communities and disconnected from our neighbors. But gardens allow us to work towards something together.” – Indira Naidoo.

You may not have seen it yet, but the QT Sydney rooftop is now producing! We get fresh honey from our QT beehive and our garden has just been harvested for the first time, producing some amazingly fresh herbs and leafy greens, all of which is being served up at Gowings Bar and Grill right now – that’s as fresh as it gets.
