Sydney’s Pizza Scene

Sep 16, 2016  ·  4 min read

By Ben Stephens

A thin to medium crust, a base sauce that leaves you craving the next bite and a number of toppings that help each other out on the palate. It’s not a hard task to create an awesome pizza, though perfecting the service, ambience and all round good times seems to be a tricky thing to pull off. Sydney has a fair few top slices around town, from the Bondi bubble to the hills of Paddington and surrounds, even into the beating heart of the CBD. It’s not hard to find a triangle of taste, however there are a few standouts that you might want to note down next time you’re in the mood for a slice of heaven. Here is a little something from me to you – after trying out some of the best, some of the worst and some fairly middle of road pizzerias, I give you a non-definitive collection of some our favourite slices around town.

Bar Reggio

This place has been opened since the start of time and if the line outside on any given night is anything to go by, they don’t show any signs of giving up on the pizza dream. A classic Italian establishment, with a menu ranging from pastas, bruschetta’s and a very long list of pizzas to choose, Bar Reg is a Darlinghurst tradition that you need to get at. The place is BYO and the closest bottle shop is only a block away at the Lord Roberts Hotel, grab a medium bodied red and enjoy.

Frankies Pizza by the slice

50 Hunter Street, open to 3am, 7 nights a week. This place has been the scene of many whiskey and fresh apple juice’s consumed, however delicious they seem, nothing beats the pizza menu on offer. By the slice or by the whole damn circle of carbohydrate heaven, the pizzas are split by base sauce, red or white, then each topped with mouth-watering concoctions. Hot tip would be the Godfather but then the Vatican Fiddler is a surprise crowd pleaser…

Epic Pizza

The newest haunt for late night pizza in Surry Hills, Epic Pizza is a welcomed addition to the dry and cardboard-like finds on Oxford street. These guys are rocking full, New York style 22-inch rims of pizza… 22-INCHES OF PIZZA! From Notorious P.I.G (bbq sauce, mozzarella, bacon, pork sausage, jalapenos, onion) to the Jon Bon Chovy (tomato, mozzarella, anchovies, cherry tomatoes, black olives, chilli, parsley), get it delivered, pick it up from the store or just stop by for a cheeky slice on your way home.

Lucio Pizzeria
The menu screams traditional Napels and the flavours do just that. Based in Darlinghurst, you might want to get there early as they don’t take bookings and those seats are snapped up fast. If you find yourself in need of cheese, I recommend the 4 formaggi (Mozzarella, fontina, gorgonzola and swiss cheese), this thing tastes like nirvana, if nirvana is cheese. Once you’re done with that, the Nutella pizza with its generous lashing of the chocolate paste, will send you into a food coma that you’ll never want to leave.

Gigi’s
About a year ago, Gigi’s decided to change the game. After seven years of whipping out some of Sydney’s most delicious carnivorous inspired pizzas in Newtown, owner Marco Matino put the meat to the side, along with the mozzarella and delivered a complete vegan friendly menu. At the time it was all a little unnerving, uncharted territory and what not, but now the line is as big as it ever was and the goods on offer are pleasing the masses. So if you’re feeling like something a little lighter but want it on a pizza base, Gigi’s is exactly what you looking for.
