spaQBy Ben Stephens.
When it comes to throwing down a deep seated warrior two pose, or an even deeper, bone nourishing half pigeon, there are a number of places around the harbour city that can accommodate you, your mat and if needed, your block. Given the choice on offer, it would be foolish to not spread the knowledge of where to get bendy around the city. This little catalogue of yoga spots was complied by taking into account a number of measures, from showering facilities and the smell of the body wash, to the vibe of the instructors and finally, above all else, the location of the studio.
Body Mind Life – Surry Hills
In the beginning of my search for a stretchy bod, I was told by many that the team at BML were above all when it came to on-the-mat training. The first class was packed and for good reason, by the end of the session I felt like I was floating. The instructor’s angelic direction through the workout, the tropical 30 degrees of the room and the aforementioned smell of the body wash, Body Mind Life made me a life long yogi pretty quickly. On top of all the goodness that comes from practicing with BML, for me, the aesthetic of the whole studio makes me you want to keep coming back.
Hom Yoga – Darlinghurst
Following on the attractively enjoyable studio theme, Hom Yoga was naturally my second home once I fell off the bandwagon after a couple of months off the mat. I needed to find a new place to practice and find that inner Zen once more. And I found it, real quick. There is something about the teachers here that offer a sense of ‘everything is going to be alright’, blocking out the pressures of the outside world. Like a sanctuary, Hom is always an inviting place to get malleable on a mat.
As far as studios go, the two above will see you in good hands, however Sydney is surrounded by natural beauty and as such would only make sense to get out there and throw down a couple of back bridges, assisted or not.
Sunrise on the Steps – Sydney Opera House
Could there be any better place to throw the mat out and get into the zone. Sunrise on the Steps isn’t here for long and of course is proving to be extremely popular. Mats and equipment are all provided, just bring yourself, some H20 and a towel. Running every Tuesday and Thursday, kicking off at 7am, be sure to book your spot on the Opera House website.
If you are in need of more yoga in your life Wanderlust 108 is happening in Bondi on April 8, here are all the deets.
Namaste and every other yoga buzz word.
