With hilarious banter and tear dropping monologues, the Sydney theatre world is currently boasting a wealth of talent on stage. From the tight community at Belvoir St Theatre to the rather formiddable scene at the Capitol Theatre, if looking to catch a show, there’s plenty to choose from. I chased down a few old mates and caught a couple of shows with them, and now we have a little catalogue of the performances that you should catch next time you are in town.
Matilda the Musical
TimeOut said ‘Matilda is a freaking masterpiece’ – solid place to start then. An adaption of the classic Roald Dahl story of a brilliant minded Matilda and her struggles of growing up. The story is helped along with a long line-up of extremely young and equally talented children, a technical set that sees youngsters flying above the audience and the wildly talented, Tim Minchin taking care of the music and lyrics. Matilda is in the final two weeks before it closes in Sydney, so with this in mind, a firm word from me to you… see this show.
The Sound of Music
The Von Trapp family are in town and have a story that they want to tell you about love, family and how the hills are alive. Originally produced for the London Palladium, this rendition of the 1959 classic stars Cameron Daddo, Amy Lehpamer and Marina Prior, who are just a few of our favourite things. The Sound of Music is coming to a close by early March, so grab your tickets and read up on the lyrics of Do-Re-Mi.
La Bohème
A tale based on love, tragedy and sacrifice while being brilliantly cheeky 120 years after it was originally written. It’s also one of the most performed operas on planet earth, telling the oldest story in the book – poet meets a seamstress on Christmas Eve and they fall for each other, madly, then silly things like jealousy get in the way. La Bohème is currently showing at in the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Opera House, a fine setting indeed.
Blanc de Blanc
Here at QT Sydney, we love a party and the creative team behind Blanc de Blanc have produced the stage party of the year. Cabaret as it should be with champagne, circus magic and some naughty laughs. Dress like you are ready to party, all white, everything is a good place to start. Blanc de Blanc has only a limited number of tickets left for the season, lucky for you QT Sydney has put together The QT Blanc de Blanc Experience, that includes Gold seating, a stay in a designer room, cocktails, bubbles and breakfast.
Arcadia
From the exceptional team at Sydney Theatre Company comes a witty number that tells the story of chaos theory and love, or just love or actually maybe both, we’re not sure as the lines get a little blurry. Starring a talented string of young Australian actors with Ryan Corr (The Water Diviner, Packed to the Rafters) and Georgia Flood (House Husbands, Here Come the Habibs). Arcadia is on until early April at the Opera House and really shouldn’t be missed.
