State of Play at White Rabbit Gallery

Mar 24, 2015  ·  2 min read

By Benjamen Judd

Now showing at one of our favourite galleries in Sydney, White Rabbit, is their first exhibition for 2015, State of Play, which will be showing until August this year.

For their first show of the year, White Rabbit have given art lovers an opportunity let out their inner child and embrace the concept of play.

State of Play will take over all four levels of White Rabbit’s space, where visitors will be table to take part in light-hearted childhood games; relive the wild years of adolescence before moving in to more darker, adult games that are filled with ambiguity and pretence.

The exhibition itself was put together as a process of play, with the 30 artists involved indulging in creative games, experimenting with techniques, styles, concepts and media to create an interactive experience.

Some of the highlights of the show are:

Yang Fudong’s Miss Huang at M Last Night (2006), a noir film in stills in which a woman and two men enact a universal game of romance and betrayal; The deeply gaudy and personal images of transvestites in Beijing by Zhang Hai’er; and One Kind of Behaviour (2000–2007), a mechanical orchestra of buckets by the Taiwanese artist Shyu Ruey-Shiann.

State of Play will show at White Rabbit Gallery until August 2015.
