Primavera 2016

Sep 30, 2016  ·  2 min read

By O.K. Glynn

The best thing about art is the fact it’s completely subjective; your mind and my mind may look at the same thing and see things as polar opposite as a bear holding an apple to symbolise the crushing infinity of naturalism in existence, or perhaps he’s just hungry and is really bad at catching salmon.

The human mind is a beautiful and dangerous place, and it’s so easy to become infatuated with one person’s artistic integrity that you forget there are new little creative brains being born all over the world every minute.

Back in 1992 Dr Edward and Mrs Cynthia Jackson, along with their family, began an annual exhibition in memory of their daughter Belinda, a talented jeweller who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 29.

Establishing an exhibition for artists 35 years and under, their aim was to commemorate their daughter through celebrating young artists in the early days of their artistic pursuits, giving them a platform with which to experiment and challenge the boundless innovation of creative and artistic expansion.

25 years on and Primavera is still progressing, championed by curator Emily Cormack. The talented young ensemble of artists chosen for this year are Steven Cybulka (SA), Pia van Gelder (NSW), Biljana Jancic (NSW), Ruth McConchie (QLD), Adelle Mills (VIC), Mira Oosterweghel (VIC), Emily Parsons-Lord (NSW) and Danae Valenza (VIC).
