A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Sep 13, 2016  ·  2 min read

By Ben Stephens

Sydney Theatre Company are no doubt about to run into some pretty hectic reviews. I feel you’ll be seeing quotes like ‘The best ever – 5 stars’ and ‘STC have done it again’. Reviews like this are usually saved for the for the best productions of the season and that is exactly what the Sydney Theatre Company aiming for with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Shakespearian classic has been taken on board by the award winning Director Kip Williams and bought to life with an outstanding cast from the Sydney Theatre Company.

Just to recap on the plot, here is an easy breakdown of the love lines you can expect. Lysander is head over heels in love with Hermia and Hermia loves Lysander. However, Hermia’s father would rather see that love directed to Demetrius. Though Helena loves Demetrius, Demetrius kind loves Hermia. Now this would be a mess as it is, though to make things worse, Hermia’s father doesn’t care to much for all these triangles and gets the Duke of Athens to push his agenda. Now as it was, under the Athenian Law, Hermia must choose either; a life with Demetrius, a life in a nunnery or death… so Hermia decides to run away to the forest with Lysander. As mind bending as it is, this is where the classic really comes to life, with a whole bunch of forest friends and a loveable chap named Snug.

Dreams, especially the midsummer ones, can be a fickle thing. This one however may just make you fall in love with the forest fairies once again. The cast is made up with the likes of Rob Collins, Honey Debelle and Rose Riley, all of who are proven professionals on stage.
