The concept is simple. “One artist. One exhibition. One notebook. 17 hours battery life. Seriously Japanese“. Maybe it isn’t so simple? Not for the Japanese man involved anyway, whose mission it is to create an entire exhibition whilst in transit, which will be judged by us, the people. At least he’s a world-renowned artist. If he can’t pull it off, no one can.
Made in 17 Hours Trailer Video from Jill Cummins on Vimeo.
Tomokazu “Matzu” Matsuyama is the man in question. The one who accepted this creative mission. Matzu was born in Japan in 1976 and now resides in the cultural mega-haven of New York City. He’s an ex-professional snowboarder that due to a career ending accident, turned to art. Now after countless stunning solo exhibitions around the States and Japan, many are glad he did change careers.
Back to the challenge. Toshiba will give Matzu a notebook to take on his Tokyo – Sydney journey. Using the notebook “as the canvas to his imagination, Matsu will create an entire collection of artworks within the 17 hours battery life of the notebook”.
Has this ever been done before? I doubt it. Who knows what this unique concept exhibition has is store. Whatever handiwork Matzu ends up creating will be interesting. The limited (free!) tickets are going fast, so make sure you get put your name down asap. Reserve your tickets here.
