Hunter Street Urban Art Intervention

Jul 27, 2016  ·  3 min read

By Ben Stephens.

Hunter Street, Sydney. What was once just the address for Frankie’s Pizza, has changed over the last couple of years, actually just over the last month the humble CBD street has had a redevelopment. Mainly due to Sydney being rebuilt for the light rail down George Street, Hunter has stemmed the flow of traffic and in it’s place comes eight insanely talented urban artists throwing paint down to show their skill off. Over the first weeks of July, each one of the artists had the chance to create an original piece alongside one another, while the city hummed behind them.

The team at aMBUSH Gallery in Chippendale and the forward thinkers at Transport of NSW have collaborated to bring this exhibition to the people of city, to remind us that the city is still open and thriving, while the light rail is repurposing the road ways of this fair city. The eight artists on show are absolute legends of their game and bring a level of urban art that is easy to dig. Jodee Knowles, Nadia Hernandez, Shannon Crees, Chris Yee, Brett Chan, Regan Tamanui, Sprinkles and Aquaman are the illustrators on show and I would highly recommend checking out their Insty accounts to see what they are all about.

Now that each piece of art has been finished, the works are on display until the end of July, after which they will be donated to charity. With the weather being that crispy blue sky that a Sydney winter brings, be sure to head down to H-Street and check out this mad installation. It gives off a certain Melbourne street art vibe, also the coffee surrounding Hunter Street is some of Sydney’s best. Winning.

Hunter Street Urban is on until July 31, find it on the corner of George and Hunter Street.
