Walking through the Devonshire St tunnel, aka the Surry Hills tunnel, one gets a fascinating cross section of Sydney folk. From buskers to business people, there seems to be no walk-of-life unrepresented. I often thought it would be the most interesting spot to take a sample from… But photojournalist Jo Wallace proved me wrong.

Along the same lines as the wildly popular Humans of New York, Wallace has created a Humans of Newtown hardcover that proves this eccentric Sydney suburb is made by the characters that reside there. Of course! Newtown… charismatically weird and eccentrically cool, Newtown. I should’ve known.

The book, like her website and Facebook page, is a collection of portraits taken on the streets of the Inner West suburb. Each photo has a short story from the subject, a feel-good or heartbreaking caption describing something that happened in their life or where they’re at currently.
