Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you be able to tell the difference between the dream world, and the real one?
I wish I were the one who spoke that immortal sentiment, but unfortunately, I’mma have to credit my main man Laurence Fishburne (aka Morpheus) for that dark little gem.
If we look past the sinister context in which those words were spoken in the Matrix for a second, we can appreciate the true nature of the dream. What do they do? Well, they transport us from the realms of reality to the borders of our imagination – those of us lucky enough to dream during our slumber will attest to the weird and wonderful conjurings their sub-conscious state produces during the wee hours.
This is the theme of HEARD · SYD. From American artist and educator, Nick Cave comes an ‘exuberant, surreal and explosive live performance’. Still a little unsure of what to expect? Let me paint you a word-picture then: imagine 60 local dancers clad in Nick’s signature sound-suits. Still, a little vague? These sound-suits are actually amazingly intricate horse-like sculptures that combine the trifecta of pop culture: art, dance and fashion to evoke what Cave describes as a ‘dream-state’. His mission to take us to ‘this place where we imagine and think about now, and how we exist in the world’.
I dunno about you guys, but dancing horses sure sounds dream-like to me!
I wish I could tell you more, but honestly, you’re as caught up as I am now. But that’s a good thing! It’s nice to keep a little mystery in the adventure, right? Run in conjunction with the multi-arts centre CarriageWorks, HEARD · SYD will be sure to entertain and captivate its audience. Best of all, its free! Head on down to Pitt St Mall on November 10 to see the show take over the public space.
For you lovers of the Gram, whip your phone because Carriageworks is offering one lucky Grammer the chance to win a 2017 Carriageworks Season Pass. Just post your best image or video of HEARD · SYD with #heardsyd @bresicwhitney @carriageworks to win.
HEARD · SYD will be in Pitt Street Mall November 10 at 5pm and at Carriageworks November 12, 10am & 12pm.Â
