The Best Ham & Cheese Toasties in Sydney

Apr 19, 2016  ·  2 min read

By Ben Stephens.

When you find yourself in need of a quick breakfast, something that will tie you over until the mid morning or even lunch, it is important to fill your body with a nourishing combination. Something hearty and tasty… for just one second, forget the jargon. Just stop with the totally organic, gluten inhibited, sugar restricted, ethically whole verbiage.

Cheese Toastie

When doing the rounds of local Sydney haunts, the duo that really stands out as a crowd pleaser is that of the humble coffee matched with ham and cheese, toasted on either two slices of crusty artisan bread or, folded into the heart of a buttery, fresh baked croissant. Now that I have your mouth watering, I have spent the last week getting to know the ham and cheese scene in Sydney a little more personally and have scribbled down a little something on my favourite spots around town.

Pablo & Rusty’s

Castlereagh Street has good food, fact. From Marys Burgers to these guys, there is a lot to offer. They are coincidently right across the road from one another. Pablo & Rusty’s have four spots around Sydney, with this superbly styled spot being their metropolis base. The ham and cheese creation here comes on two cuts of sourdough, toasted to a precision that is hard to find in this city. The cheese is oozy, but not oily. You want to attack this one with a knife and fork to savour those moments in between.

Baker Bros

York Street on a working day can be a little hectic, if you find yourself between King and York street, dart into Baker Bros mid way down the block. You’ll be welcomed like a family member of a large clan while you pop your order in. Take a seat at the bar and wait for the ham and cheese croissant creation to be delivered to you. As you’ll see, the delicateness of the pastry in front of you is a stand out, fresh baked, packed with the goodies you have come to expect and toasted well. Get it in and get your day started.
