Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is from the Gumatj clan of the Yolngu. He was born blind, comes across somewhat shy and is one incredibly talented musician. July 31 will see the release of his third studio album, The Gospel Songs, and that means it’s time to embark on a national tour.
His voice has been described as having “transcendental beauty” and although fragile, its poignancy has received praise from the likes of Elton John, Sting, Bjork and will.I.am. Furthermore he has played for the Queen and President Obama amongst other dignitaries, has received multiple ARIAS and his debut album went triple platinum in Australia.
Gurrumul was born off the coast of Arnhem Land, on an island called Galiwin’ku or Elcho Island. Formerly part of Yothu Yindi, he now plays with Saltwater Band. He sings in both English and the Yolngu language in a way that is both angelic and very haunting. It’s hard not be moved when listening to his high tenor voice, it’s a very unique brand of emotive folk.
Gurrumul’s mother and aunts raised him surrounded by the traditional music of his clan and the songs and lullabies from the church on Elcho Island. The Gospel Songs is a dedication to those relatives and explores that gospel sound he heard from them and at the local Methodist church every Sunday.
The Gospel Songs tour will see this Australian icon accompanied by an orchestra and local choirs. If you’re lucky enough to get the chance to go, you’d be downright silly to turn it down.
