Flight Facilities & Sydney Symphony Orchestra

May 5, 2016  ·  3 min read

By Ben Stephens.

The term ‘gig of the year’ can be thrown around so loosely these days, so carelessly, without rhyme or reason. So you won’t find that here. What you will find though will convince you that the upcoming Flight Facilities show is something that you don’t want to miss out on. Let me tell you a tale about to two friends united through a mutual love of music that transcended genres. A friendship that was solidified within, what was at the time, the thriving Sydney nightclub scene. Hugo Gruzman and Jimmy Lyell released a single back in 2010 under the name of Flight Facilities. Triple J gave it spin and the nation fell in love. So much so, that the single Crave You scored the number 19 spot in the Hottest 100, 2010. From here the two boys went on to a huge tour of the homeland and then as it happens, found that they had a rather large following in Japan. Another tour ensued.

Skip forward six whole years and the boys have released banger after banger, while cleverly only releasing one studio album. Down to Earth was released in late 2014 and enjoyed huge praise, which led to the duo playing a sold out show with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I’ve heard many Melbournian mates say this was the best gig they have ever been too and it hurts. Because it probably was. I feel this is a fitting time to inform you that the Hugo and Jimmy are about to gather the Sydney Symphony Orchestra together and take over The Domain here in Sydney.

This collaboration is apart of the inaugural Red Bull Weekender, a four-day festival shaped by the Red Bull Music Academy team and curated by two Sydney music legends, Jamie Bennett and Jimmy Sing. The festival will take over Sydney with live music, events, lectures and club nights in early September.

There are no doubt a couple of surprises in store for the Sydney show, with so many spots to fill when it comes to the featured artists in each song. Be sure to grab your tickets now, because ticket scalpers are the worst people in the world and should burn in hell. You can grab your tickets from the Red Bull website.

As one part of the duo, Hugo hides another skill, his snapchat art is in another world. You can find him @hugo.g on Snapchat or see his body of work on Instagram.

Hugo and Jimmy will be taking flight with the state Symphony Orchestra on September 10.
