By Ben Stephens…
Street art. Melbourne does it so well, with plenty of laneways and terrible weather, it just works for them. Here in Sydney, the street art scene is quietly booming, not overly popularised, though if you know where to look for it, it’s everywhere… but to be honest, I don’t know where to look, I really don’t. Thankfully the rad team at Culture Scouts have just started walking tours through some of Sydney’s best street art hotspots. Culture made easy.
The creators behind Culture Scouts are perfectly placed to show off the art scene; one is Emilya Colliver, founder of Art Pharmacy, a gallery that focuses on making affordable art accessible to everyone, and the other is Melinda Vassalo, the author of ‘Street Art of Sydney’s Inner West’. Between the two of them they have curated walks across Newtown, Redfern and Chippendale to represent the creative side of Sydney’s art scene.
The tours were created by asking the question ‘where would you take your best friend in Sydney?’. This concept works really well, as apart from showing off the rad art scene, the tours will take you into some seriously good coffee spots and with their Newtown tour that finishes with local craft brewers, Young Henrys. These tours are as unique as the art works on show.
The tours are capped at 15 people, this gives you the opportunity to ask all your questions on the complexities of postmodern art work in the Holocene Epoch or what pale ale is the recommendation at Young Henrys… for the complexities, check with your tour guide, for the pale ale, try the Brew I Am.
If you want a guide to yourself, get in touch with team at Culture Scouts and they will be able to craft you a personalised tour around Sydney.
