Art Express 2016

Cast your mind back a little bit to the good old days of the schoolyard, remember the art you created in art class? Those very conceptual works that they were. I personally remember the sympathetic reassurance from my art teacher, saying that my unintentionally Picasso-styled portrait was ‘really inspiring’. Thanks Miss Miller, thanks a lot. I look at that piece even today to scare myself out of the idea of pursuing a career as a contemporary artist. However, there are some among us that master the arts before even leaving high school and because of the skills these young wizards adults possess, they need somewhere to exhibit all the wow. That is where ARTEXPRESS 2016 at the Art Gallery of NSW comes into the picture.

ARTEXPRESS takes a selection of artworks that were produced for the practical part of the HSC assessment for visual arts. Meaning all this artwork is spawned in the depths of a very high pressure time, a pressure that when in the midst of the exhibition, is hard to imagine. The collection is eclectic, with ceramics, drawings, graphics, paintings prints, textiles and fibres depicting a wide range of subject matter. The very broad range of artworks coming together pays homage to the mad skills of the next generation of Australian artists while creating a very interesting exhibition.
