Indeed, Surry Hill’s store Grandma Takes A Trip would be exactly like raiding your favourite nanna’s wardrobe. If your nanna was the fashion editor for Vogue, best friends with Coco Chanel and was known to share a pina colada or five with Elsa Schiaparelli.
Located on Crown Street, Grandma Takes A Trip is the jewel in a hub of vintage shopping stores and has become a staple destination for anyone who has both an eye for style and a sense of history all in one go. While the recycled fashion trend has been running for a while now, there are very few boutiques left that sell genuine vintage clothing. Many have resorted to simply buying old fabrics and repurposing them with the attempt of creating a vintage affect. Not so with Grandma Takes A Trip!
Owner, Nicola Sault, built the store around her own enormous personal collection of vintage fashion, sourced from the UK and Europe and spanning the couture boom years after WW1 and the 60’s and 70’s. Sault has also built up a formidable collection of Australian fashions from the same eras, gathering dresses and accessories from all over the country. It is the kind of store you could expect to find a Jenny Kee original print scarf next to a pair of silk Balenciaga gloves teamed with a Stephen Jones pillbox hat.
Grandma Takes A Trip is located at 263 Crown Street, Surry Hills.
