Australian Centre for Photography, Paddington
For the three shows that form the Australian Centre for Photography’s Winter Season 2014, the focus is on the work of artists who use multiple mediums including sculpture, painting, performance and, of course, photography. The links between the artist’s and their work beyond that association of form and medium are subtler but the make for a fascinating trio.
Terry Burrows photographic series Banaras Backs capture figures sitting or squatting on the Ghats (steps) along the banks of the river Ganges in Varanasi (Banaras) in India. Paired up and shown in much the same compositions, the images take on sculptural qualities, only the variation in clothes and body shape giving a sense of an individual. Hiromi Tango, fresh from her recent show at Sullivan & Strumpf, presents the multimedia installation work Dust Storm, an individual response to the dust storm that swept over the East Coast of Australia in 2009. Rodney Pople’s Lie Of The Land mixes painting and photography to create portraits of animals in classical interiors that madly mix cultures, influences and points of view.
