Anything that Taronga Zoo does is good by us. They work tirelessly to educate and bring attention to the dangers faced by some of the world’s most amazing animals – dangers that are really because we humans can be a little short-sighted and selfish when it comes to sharing this globe we call home. One such creature is the rhino which has unfortunately, due to poachers and loss of habitat, are now facing extinction.
During the entire month of April Taronga Zoo have organised a public exhibition called Wild! Rhinos Artist Program that is a series of commissioned rhino-shaped artworks. Keep an eye out as you walk the streets of Sydney…a huge herd of 125 wildly colourful rhino sculptures have charged into town to create a spectacular world class sculpture trail through the streets, parks and public spaces of our awesome city (and Dubbo, if you happen to be heading there) and surrounds during to help raise awareness of the critical plight facing rhinos.
More than 150 artists submitted their designs to be used for the rhinos, and out of this 85 were selected by a committee that were no doubt hard pressed to find the best of the best. The team have also produced an App and map that you can download from the official website that can help you locate each unique sculpture as it is found over Sydney. Some are even at the Zoo itself, meaning that a day trip may well be in order just to tick that one off (so worth it).
At the end of the month, each rhino sculpture will be put up for auction to raise money to aid the Taronga Zoo Black Rhino breeding program.
The Wild! Rhinos Artist Program will run until the end of April across the city of Sydney.
