Tropfest 2014

Aug 23, 2014  ·  2 min read

By Sas Lyon

QT Sydney has an intrinsic link with the Australian film industry, and our partnership with Tropfest is one of our most treasured links to this creative community. The QT Hotels and Resorts parent company, Amalgamated Holdings Limited (AHL) also owns and/or operates Event Cinemas Australia, Greater Union Cinemas Australia, Birch Carroll & Coyle Cinemas Australia, State Theatre Sydney. Moonlight Cinemas. Needless to say we are lovers of the talkies!

In addition to this AHL also announced in September a new partnership between Moonlight Cinema, QT Sydney, and Tropfest.

The iconic short film event returns to Sydney’s Centennial Park on December 7 this year, and now the new AHL deal will see the event screened live at Moonlight Cinema locations across the country; Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens Central Lawn, Adelaide’s Botanic Park, New Farm Park at Brisbane Powerhouse and Perth’s Kings Park and Botanic Garden.

Other live outdoor screenings of Tropfest will take place at Hobart’s Salamanca Square and an additional three Perth screenings thanks to the Film and Television Institute; rooftop movies, Northbridge Plaza and the James St Amphitheatre, with other venues still to be announced.

“Tropfest stands proud as the world’s largest short film festival and an iconic event on Australia’s cultural calendar. In partnering up with Moonlight Cinema, another favourite summer pastime of Australian film lovers, we’re able to ensure more Australians have an opportunity to take part in our Festival” said Michael Laverty, Tropfest Managing Director.

Ian Sutherland, the Group Marketing Director, AHL added, “Tropfest will be a shining star on Moonlight Cinema’s glittering summer program. We can’t wait to bring a night of great quality short films, food, friends and festival fun to film-lovers at Moonlight Cinemas all over Australia. And those who want to be part of the Sydney event can enjoy designer accommodation and the official after party at QT Sydney.

Hyde Park, which plays host to the original screening and the awards ceremony is just a stones throw from the QT Sydney entrance!
