In our ongoing quest to appear more cultural than we really are but also in our determination to make sure that our guests get to experience the very best that Sydney has to offer, we are incredibly pleased to announce the latest exhibition from London-based artist, Sal Higgens at Leonard Mattis Studio in Surry Hills.
Titled Threshold, Higgens’ latest series of work explores the fringes of the human psyche and it’s fascination with the Underworld and most notably, it’s canine guardians.
The appearance of these sentinels poses a question about their presence and purpose here. What dormant secrets, what dark forces might lie beyond the portal they guard. A metaphor for the borderline between our conscious and subconscious mind, some works depict a brooding malevolence, others assail us with a visual cacophony; a roar that is almost audible.
The fluidity and dynamism of her sketches capture an essence of the spirits that guard the threshold of our consciousness. Despite the hinted at darkness found within the works, there is almost a joyous experience to the paintings, found in the exuberant use of brushstrokes. Best of all, Sal’s works will be up for sale on the night so get their early enough to get a decent perusal of the collection and make yourself a wise investment.
Threshold by Sal Higgens opening night is Wednesday, 20 November from 6pm at Leonard Mattis Studio. For more information on Sal, head to her website here. For the exhibition, head to the Facebook page here.
