We often ask our guests what their favourite part of their stay in Sydney has been and aside from the impeccable service and luscious beds they find here with us the most often heard response is the scope of art they come across.
For a relatively young city (young in comparison to the more well-known meccas for artistic experience) Sydney has developed a strong presence in the contemporary art world. And it is exhititions such as Art Gallery of NSW’s Illuminate that is helping build that image internationally.
Now in it’s last week, Illuminate is an immersive installation, created with paper, light and sound, explores stories and ideas of home and housing, culture and community.
An initiative of the Goomeroi people from Toomelah and Boggabilla in northwest New South Wales, Illuminate draws on their history, experiences and intergenerational relationships.
Blending contemporary artistic practice and traditional cultural practice, the project is led by members of the Euraba Artists and Papermakers – May Hinch, Leonie Binge, Deborah Knox, Lola Binge and Christine Dumas – who have created a life-sized mission home from paper, providing the structure for sound and light projections.
Illuminate is now showing until 16 March and admission is free.
