THE FORTY-NINERS

We are fond of a collaboration. It shows that not only can people work together but that there is some hope for humanity after all because, well, people are working together. And the result is often the creation of beautiful things. And we like beautiful things as much as we like world peace.

The Fortynine Studio is a multidisciplinary collaborative design studio based in Sydney that makes some of those beautiful things that we like so much.

Made up of the talents of Lauren Austin, Ben Elbourne, Carly Hush, Sarah Spackman and Harriet Watts, the studio focuses on the development of self-initiated projects. They also create work for research, exhibition, commission and sale. Having worked together for a number of years, they share a common ethos and foster an open collaborative working environment for designing, thinking and making. Their varying backgrounds, sensibilities and approaches allow them to work together across a range of scales, disciplines and materiality.

They also focus on creating objects from local and recycled resources, thus contributing to Australian design culture through considered, locally based design practice. The guys are also open to project suggestions and commissioned pieces, which means you can finally get that talking-piece chair and side-table you always wanted for your hallway!

Whilst the crew have yet to set up an online store, they do welcome you to head down to their physical studio to peruse the pre-made for sale items there. And you can also meet some of the team behind the lovely things which is always nice.
