Harriet Goodall is a basket maker. This may sound like something from the olden days, but she really does make baskets and to say they are amazing is an understatement.
Based in the Southern Highlands, Harriet began making her baskets back in 2007 during her own nesting phase (she was pregnant at the time). Her intricate creations are more art than basket and more architectural than design and reflect the shapes found in nature.
“My creations reference both the ephemeral beauty of nature”, says Harriet. “Feathers, pods, cocoons, bones, nests, quills and the detritus of industrial manufacturing; rusted corrugated iron, furniture, machinery, wire. Inspiration comes from the delicate tonal colour changes in the Australian landscape and the form and patina of the materials available in the season or place.”
Harriet’s work is all hand-made by herself using natural and recycled fibres sourced locally and internationally. Her weaving doesn’t only focus on baskets but also lighting and sculptural work. She also holds weaving classes so you can make and create and design your own baskets and sculptures. These are held around various parts of Australia but you can also make a booking direct with Harriet herself.
For more information on Harriet, check out her blog and website here.
