spaQAfter an extensive renovation, the Museum of Contemporary Art at Sydney’s Circular Quay has finally reopened.
The $53M job was placed into the very capable hands of Australian architect Sam Marshall. Marshall was previously known for his work on the Dinosaur Design stores in Paddington and New York, and Darren Knight Gallery in Waterloo. His vision for the new MCA consisted of a stack of interlocking cubes and rectangles of different colours, the depths separated by big glass windows and black cladding along the façade. And it worked.
It’s clear that Marshall understood the nuances of the area, which is predominately filled with mid 19th Century design. The new façade, whilst undeniably modern in its aesthetic, doesn’t intrude upon the older feel of the Rocks that sits frames the building.
