There is a reason why people use the term ‘edgy’ to describe something that’s ahead of its time and cool. It’s because that which exists on the fringes of society isn’t afraid to stand out from the crowd and be different. And that’s exactly what the Sydney Fringe Festival, all through the month of September, is about.

Starting on September 1 and wrapping on the night of the 30th, the Sydney Fringe Festival takes place across Sydney’s fringe suburbs – Woolloomooloo, Surry Hills, Glebe, Newtown and Marrickville. It’s a celebration of music, art, food and all the things that make each of these regions such a vibrant hub of experience.

Now in it’s fifth year the Sydney Fringe Festival is the largest independent arts festival in NSW and this year we are gearing up for the biggest most impressive festival yet. Not only are we presenting some of the best artists the city has to offer but we are also featuring family events, artist workshops, public forums and street activations. We are supporting emerging and early career artists, and partnering with some of our favourite arts organisations. Spread out across five cultural villages, the Sydney Fringe Festival presents hundreds of productions in over 60 venues. We celebrate local artists and encourage new audiences to experience the independent arts of Sydney to build a stronger more sustainable sector.

This year, the list of events is one of the biggest yet. Starting with the Heat the Street launch party that takes place on Sunday, August 31, any given night you can expect to see some of the world’s best comedians at the Comedy Factory; Rai Thistlethwayte’s Sun Rai with Ben Vanderwal or Martha Marlow at Venue 505; or the ever amazing Art Pharmacy on Oxford Street where The Lab, an interactive gallery space, will house a selling exhibition of undiscovered contemporary art, featuring a range of original works from emerging painters, photographers, illustrators, print makers and sculptors.

At it’s core, the Sydney Fringe Festival is the thriving heart of Sydney’s creative pulse and highlights that some of the best things exist on the edges of our great city.

The Sydney Fringe Festival will run from September 1 until September 30. Launch party to be held on Sunday, August 31.
